๐ก Navigating the New Digital Hustle: My Journey on TikTok
Malo le soifua family and friends!
Most of you know me as someone who is naturally an introvert. Iโve always been more comfortable in the background than in the spotlight. However, Iโve recently decided to step out of my comfort zone to try something new: TikTok Streaming.
Iโm doing this for two reasons. First, to help myself integrate more with people and grow my confidence. Second, I see a real opportunity here in Samoa to "hustle" and earn a bit of extra income through what they call Monetization.
Since many have asked how this works, I wanted to explain it simply for those who aren't "tech-savvy."
What is TikTok Monetization?
In short, itโs a way for creators to get rewarded for the time and energy they put into making videos or going Live. On TikTok, this usually happens through "Gifting."
When a creator is "Live" (streaming in real-time), viewers can send virtual stickers or iconsโlike a Rose or a Coffee. These are bought with small amounts of money. Think of it like a "digital tip jar" for someone whose content you enjoy or want to support.
Important Note: Gifting is not compulsory. It is entirely your free will! Just having you watch or follow me is a huge support in itself.
How Does a Creator "Activate" This?
Itโs not as simple as just opening an account. To even have the option to earn or go Live, TikTok has several strict requirements to ensure the person is a real, trustworthy creator:
- The 1,000 Follower Milestone: You cannot go Live or receive gifts until you reach at least 1,000 followers. This is the "magic number" that unlocks the door.
- Business Account Switch: You have to switch your settings to a "Business" or "Creator" account to access the professional tools.
- Identity Verification: This is a big one. To actually withdraw any "tips" earned, you have to verify your identity with official ID to prove you are over 18 and a real person.
- Going Live: Once those steps are done, the "Live" button appears, allowing you to broadcast to your followers.
๐งฎ How Much Does Your Gift Actually Support Me?
Many of you see gifts like Roses, Galaxies, or Lions flying across the screen during a Live stream and wonder, "How much does Richard actually get to keep?" To be transparent and help other Samoan creators, Iโve explained the math below. Itโs a bit more than just "half," because of a specific 9% processing deduction TikTok applies at the end.
The Step-by-Step Breakdown:
- The 50% Split: When someone sends a gift (Coins), TikTok takes 50% immediately. The other 50% is given to the creator as Diamonds.
- Example: 100 Coins โ 50 Diamonds.
- The 9% Platform Commission: This is the part many people miss! Before those Diamonds are turned into cash you can spend, TikTok deducts a 9% commission fee for processing the payout.
- The Final Conversion: After that 9% is gone, the remaining amount is converted from USD to Samoan Tala (WST).
